An Import Export Code (IEC) is a 10-digit number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). It is mandatory for any business that wants to import goods into India or export goods out of India. The application costs just Rs 500, the code is valid for life, and the entire process is online.

When You Do Not Need IEC

IEC is not required for: (1) goods imported or exported for personal use, (2) imports or exports by government departments and notified agencies, and (3) some categories listed in the DGFT exemption list. Exporters of services earning less than Rs 5 lakh per year may also be exempt in certain cases. Check the latest DGFT notifications for your specific situation.

Documents You Will Need

IEC Application Checklist

  • PAN of the business entity (or personal PAN for proprietorship)
  • Aadhaar of the applicant (proprietor/partner/director)
  • Cancelled cheque or bank certificate with account number and IFSC
  • Address proof of the business (rent agreement, utility bill, or ownership document)
  • Passport-size photograph of the applicant (digital copy)
  • Digital signature (Class 2 or Class 3 DSC) or Aadhaar-based e-sign
  • Business registration document (incorporation certificate, partnership deed, or GST certificate)

How to Apply for IEC

    Register on the DGFT portal

    On dgft.gov.in, register with PAN and email—or sign in with an existing DGFT account (e.g. RCMC).

    Fill the online application (ANF 2A)

    Open Services → IEC → Apply for IEC and enter business details, bank information, and nature (manufacturer, trader, service provider, etc.).

    Upload documents

    Upload PAN, address proof, bank proof (cancelled cheque or certificate), and photo within the portal's file limits.

    Pay Rs 500 and sign

    Pay Rs 500 online, then sign with DSC or Aadhaar e-sign.

    Receive your IEC

    Download your IEC from the portal when issued—usually 3–7 working days, often 24–48 hours.

Annual Update Required

While the IEC does not expire, DGFT requires you to update your IEC details annually between April and June each year. Failure to update may lead to deactivation. You can update for free on the DGFT portal.

Yes. Sole proprietors, partnerships, LLPs, Pvt Ltd companies, and even individuals can apply for an IEC. You just need a PAN and a bank account.
Your IEC number is actually your PAN number. DGFT uses your PAN as the IEC for ease of identification. But you still need to formally apply and get the IEC issued.
Generally no. Customs will not clear commercial imports without a valid IEC. The only exceptions are personal imports and certain government or exempted categories.
DGFT may deactivate your IEC if you do not file the annual update between April and June. You can reactivate it by filing the update, but it may cause delays in your import/export operations.
